Artist Statement
My name is Larryetta McCraw. I am the mother of two wonderful young men. I've been an artist all my life, and was born into a family of artists. My background as a designer began in trade school and college where I received degrees from LA Trade Tech and California State University of Long Beach. I have had the great pleasure to work for Disney, Ice Capades and fashion houses in California as a pattern maker and designer. All of these experiences are used in the development of my little people sculptures.

The inspiration behind creating Peoplemache came during a time when I decided to take a break from working at Disney and stay home with my family. During this time, I explored many projects, such as painting, illustration, sculpture, weaving, felting and knitting. I studied the Bible considerably and developed a strong walk with God. I began to understand deeply that God is the giver of gifts and He knows exactly what He has in store for me. During a moment of prayer, I heard a strong message to “sculpt in paper”, even though I had never done this before. I began to experiment with paper mache techniques — applying strips of paper and glue to create figures. Over time, what began as a vision and hobby, developed into the PeopleMache sculptures you see today.

It is my hope that PeopleMache will be an encouragement and inspiration to those who may feel hopeless. Though my dolls express a joyfulness of spirit and beauty of movement, color and expression, it is important to remember that they were first torn bits of discarded paper. Just as they are transformed into something new, we too can be made anew through His Spirit.
